IT’S okay to party as long as you are safe.
That is the message from staff at Cranbourne Secondary College who, along with other local schools and community officers, have helped devise the City of Casey’s new Safe Party education kit for teachers.
The kit was launched last week as part of Drug Action Week to help reduce the risk of students’ parties getting out of control.
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford said the Safe Party project recognised the importance of young people socialising and having parties.
“The Casey Safe Party project provides checklists and information to put in place beforehand to reduce the possibility of trouble such as gatecrashers or from alcohol or other drug abuse,” Cr Bradford said.
The Department of Human Services provided funds for the kit in an aim to assist secondary school teachers in coordinating Safe Party interactive workshops for students.
The workshops will involve the police, ambulance paramedics, drug and alcohol workers, sexual assault counsellors, family planning educators and local government workers.
“Casey Safe Party open days would ideally be incorporated as part of the curriculum for year nine and 10 students, and I hope schools will continue the program,” Cr Bradford said.
The council distributed Casey Safe Party CD ROMs to 21 local secondary schools in time for Drug Action Week, which ran from 18 to 24 June.
