EXCITEMENT is mounting at Cranbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens as its long-awaited new project, The Australian Garden, nears completion.
Horticulturalist Lindy Harris is one person who can’t wait to unveil the world-class creation to the public when the garden opens in May.
Ms Harris is one of a six-man horticultural team responsible for mapping and planting The Australian Garden to suit the unique landscape design.
The multimillion-dollar development features all native Australian plants in four themed gardens.
“I have seen a lot of change in the 12 months I have worked here,” she said.
“The garden is coming along really well. There is a lot of growth and the design and hard landscaping is so dramatic.
“It is wonderful to observe the speed in which small plants, propagated and nurtured at the nursery at Cranbourne, explode into growth once planted,” she said.
Ms Harris said she had never in her experience as a horticulturalist worked on such a large-scale project as The Australian Garden.
She said she looked forward to sharing the beauty and wonder of the garden with the rest of the world.
“There has been nothing like this in a botanic garden for years. It is really an amazing project.
“People will be gobsmacked when they see the impressiveness of the design.
“I can’t wait to hear what people say when they come in. I’m sure it will be a big ‘wow’,” she said.
“I’m just lucky to have been involved in such a huge project from beginning to end.”
