TOORADIN Primary School is in the top-three schools winning awards for energy-savings.
Four students received the Victorian Resource Smart Schools award on behalf of the school at the Melbourne Cricket Ground recently.
Over the past 12 months Tooradin Primary School has implemented an independent audit of energy needs.
As a result, the school has removed more than 100 fluorescent light tubes and connected all computers to power boards to save students clamouring behind or under benches to find switches.
Students at Tooradin have designated roles as energy smart monitors. They check that all lights are turned off when classrooms are not being used, wear badges, and alert each other to classrooms’ energy use. Toilets are fitted with sensor lights to automatically turn off when not in use.
“Students are fully involved and aware of the significance of conserving power and using green energy,” teacher Susan Tobin said. “We did pretty well to end up in the top three.”
City of Casey and Sunrise Energy are participants in the project, minimising cost to the school.
