STUDENTS at Cranbourne Secondary College are ready to flick the switch on the school’s power supply.
It might sound like a rebellious act, but on 20 March all lights and computers will be turned off at the Stawell Street school to recognise Earth Hour, the global warming initiative that is gaining global momentum.
Classrooms at the school will be inthe dark between 9am and 10am on the last day of term one.
Sam Diggines, a year nine student at Cranbourne, said her class was busy trying to rally support from local businesses.
“We’re encouraging businesses and other schools in the area to join us for one hour without power,” she said.
“We’ll be leaving the refrigerator on, but all the lights and computers will be switched off.”
Despite being in the dark, a number of light-sensitive activities have already been organised.
“Our class will be completing our Earth Hour projects, and we’ll be making educational announcements over the public address system,” Sam said.
The official Earth Hour is scheduled for 29 March, when millions of Australian households are expected to turn off their lights to help halt rising temperatures around the world.
