A LYNDHURST Secondary College VCE student is jetting to Belgium as part of the World Education Program’s international student exchange.
Year 11 student Liana Simmonds will leave Australia on 30 August and spend five months living and studying in Belgium.
The enthusiastic 17-year-old said this would be her first trip overseas.
“The longest I’ve ever been away from my family has been one and a half days, so I’m definitively going to find it hard,” she said.
“I’m nervous about leaving everything behind and travelling to a completely different place.”
The Cranbourne North resident said she was looking forward to celebrating a white Christmas in Belgium with her host family, which includes three children aged one, eight and 11.
“I’ve been talking to them on the phone but it’s difficult because they don’t speak very good English,” she said.
Liana said she wasn’t looking forward to the 24-and-a-half-hour flight.
The World Education Program organises international academic programs for adventurous Australian high school students.
Living and studying overseas allows students to fulfil their dreams of learning about another part of the world, gain an insight and understanding of other cultures and improve prospects for employment in an international marketplace.
The program also brings international exchange students from European and South American countries into Australian schools.
