Knitters jump to babies’ aid

RESIDENTS at Regis Aged Care Facility in Cranbourne have been busy knitting jumpers to send to overseas children whose parents succumbed to AIDS.
Regis diversional therapist Barbara Scott said the ladies were very proud of what they had done.
The baby items are sent from Cranbourne to Perth then forwarded on by a volunteer nurse for distribution to needy babies in Africa.
In a letter from Stutterheim Hospital in South Africa, the Regis Aged Care Facility residents were thanked for their kind donations.
The letter said the hospital was facing a huge dilemma with destitute children who had lost their parents from AIDS.
“This is our way of making their burdens a little easier,” it read.
The hospital also has problems with young mothers giving birth but not having any clothing for their newborn.
Ms Scott said knitting the jumpers had been a very rewarding experience for the residents as well and it was great for them to know they were helping children in need.
She said the facility was always looking for wool donations to help the residents knit the clothing.
“If anyone in the community has any in their bottom cupboards it would be greatly appreciated,” she said.
