MORE than 50 kids turned out at an indoor sports activity day on the holidays to test their skills on the court.
The day was part of the City of Casey’s school holiday program in which kids played volleyball, soccer, football and tennis at the Casey Indoor Sports Centre.
They were then rewarded with a barbecue at the Casey Cafe, which also incorporated its William Angliss Institute of TAFE program for hospitality students.
Casey Cafe owner Phil Sealey said the children had a great time as well as a good feed.
Mr Sealey said he was also very impressed with the way his students handled themselves in preparing and serving the food for the kids, a part of their assessment in the course.
“It was a great experience for my kids and they thoroughly enjoyed it,” he said.
Part of the assessment for the students, many of who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, includes cooking, grilling, hygiene, collaboration and customer service.
“They all did really, really good jobs. I was really impressed with them,” Mr Sealey said.
“They don’t have as many opportunities as I would like to have that hands-on experience. It also gave me the opportunity to see them under pressure.”
