Election meet provides heat and light

RESIDENTS came facetoface with Casey Council election candidates at a special information evening on Monday.
About 40 locals braved the rain for the Meet Your Candidates forum at TurningPoint Family Church in Cranbourne.
The event was organised as an election platform for Balla Balla Ward and Mayfield Ward candidates to speak about their plans for the city and answer questions from voters.
The forum was one of five hosted by various churches throughout the city this week.
All four Balla Balla candidates attended while only three from Mayfield made an appearance.
Karen Barker, Kevin Bradford, Avtar Singh Gill and Julie Kelly failed to show.
Organiser Julie Egan said that despite a few heated moments, the night was a success.
“There was some hostility from the Finsbury Road residents (Devon Meadows) and Kerril Burns asked Steve Beardon the ‘why did you spit the dummy?’ question, but besides that it was a good night.
“Every question was answered and every candidate had an opportunity to answer the questions posed to them,” she said.
Current Balla Balla Ward councillor Colin Butler said the forum was a good way for residents to put a face to a name and applauded the church for its initiative.
“Both the residents and candidates would have got something out of the night.
“It just gives people a chance to go facetoface with candidates which they might not normally get to do,” he said.
Mayfield Ward candidate Steve Beardon described the evening as a “lot of fun”.
“A good night was had by all.
“It was interesting to meet the candidates and hear their reasons for standing and agenda,” he said.
