MORE than 2700 primary school children learnt hands-on how to help preserve the environment at the recent Casey Environmental Expo.
By learning through play at Wilson Botanic Park, students discovered alternative eco-friendly techniques for everyday activities such as throwing out rubbish, using electricity in the home and gardening.
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford said the expo aimed to make the students more environmentally conscious.
“The Casey Environmental Expo is such a simple and effective concept which is targeted perfectly to primary aged students,” Cr Bradford said.
“It is fantastic to see youngsters engrossed in sustainability issues and learning lessons which they will introduce into their own homes and families.”
The students learnt about waste management, solar energy, Aboriginal culture, biodiversity, water conservation, horticulture and road safety through interactive lessons and demonstrations.
“I encourage parents and teachers to continue to reinforce the messages instilled through the Casey Environmental Expo at home and at school,” Cr Bradford said.
