THE Cranbourne community has once again opened its pockets to help those in need, despite not being asked for the donations.
Mayfield Ward councillor Steve Beardon said he had been overwhelmed with donations of food, toys and games from local residents and businesses, so he and Cranbourne MP Jude Perera had decided to start a toy and food drive.
All donated items will go to the Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS).
CISS manager Leanne Petrides said the donations were extremely welcome and would stock a small cupboard to go towards needy families throughout the year.
The organisation provides a number of services to the Casey South community, the most requested of which is assistance with emergency relief to low-income families.
These families often struggle with education and food costs, utilities and bills.
CISS provides food parcels and vouchers and other items required.
“People often think it is just at Christmas that people struggle to provide a nice day for their family,” Ms Petrides said.
“But there are many situations as well.
“It might be one of their children’s birthday or maybe they have been invited to a party and can’t go because they can’t afford a present.”
Ms Petrides said she had been overwhelmed at how supportive all of the ward councillors and council itself had been towards the organisation, not just with financial support but emotional support as well.
To donate to CISS, drop in at Mr Perera’s office at 157A Sladen Street or the CISS at 156A-160 Sladen Street, Cranbourne.
