SCHOOLCHILDREN are encouraged to watch their step tomorrow (Friday) on National Walk Safely to School Day.
The annual event will see primary school-aged children and their parents walking all or part of the way to and from school and encourage them to continue to do so after the event.
Cranbourne West Primary School is promoting the day through its Walking School Bus.
The day aims to encourage greater participation by schools and the community for activities that encourage walking and active transport.
Cranbourne West’s Walking School Bus Program began three years ago and students from all grade levels participate.
Holt MP Anthony Byrne said Walk Safely to School Day the event was a great opportunity to promote the benefits of walking for health and encouraged people to find ways to make walking a safe, easy and fun activity.
Casey Council is also supporting the event to help children develop their road awareness skills.
“Walking to school has so many benefits,” mayor Colin Butler said.
“Not only are children getting exercise, they are learning the road rules and getting to know their neighbourhoods.
“Leaving the car at home is also good news for the environment.”
