Cranbourne RSL president Barry Jones will reminisce with other veterans and guests when the club celebrates the 40th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan.

THE Cranbourne RSL will remember those fallen in the battle of Long Tan.
A dinner celebration and commemoration will be held on 16 August on the 40th anniversary of the battle between Australian troops and the Viet Cong.
Cranbourne RSL president Barry Jones described the barrage upon Australians in 1966 at their operations base at Nui Dat, a piece of high ground surrounded by rubber plantations.
He said the Viet Cong had not been prepared for the effectiveness of Australia’s artillery fire and had paid dearly as a result.
Eighteen Australians were killed and 24 wounded while 245 Viet Cong bodies were found in the battle area.
On 16 August, guest speaker John Methven from the Vietnam Veteran Association of Victoria will talk about Long Tan.
There will also be a cabaret show ‘Those Were the Days’ starring the Purrfect Girls Cheryl and Dianne.
Cost is $20 including two course meal and commemorative Battle of Long Tan badge. Medals are to be worn. Bookings are essential.
