SNAPPER are being caught in Western Port in the largest numbers for decades, according to renowned fishing expert and Cranbourne local Paul Worsteling.
Mr Worsteling said several snapper around the 3kg-6kg mark were being caught on a regular basis by anglers who called into his two tackle shops in Cranbourne and Berwick.
He said excited fishermen who had struggled to catch one snapper in the past few years were landing bagfulls in a season being described as a dream.
“Both the Western Port and Port Phillip bays are in such amazing condition,” Mr Worsteling said.
“This is seeing the baby pinky snapper thrive into more mature snapper around the 4kg mark.”
Mr Worsteling described snapper as Victoria’s premier game fish – with Western Port known around Australia for its quality stocks.
“Western Port is doing very well and is getting the flow-on effect from Port Phillip,” he said.
Mr Worsteling also addressed Casey Council on Tuesday night and spoke about how Casey Fields could benefit from a fishing challenge.
A lake in the Casey Fields site has been stocked with 300 rainbow trout and would present an ideal spot for a Casey Fishing Challenge, he said.
“We are hoping to get something up for next year and get about 500 people fishing in Cranbourne,” Mr Worsteling said.
