THIEVES have targeted a Cranbourne home, which has been up for sale for about seven months, while the invalid owner was upstairs.
The Kellett Street house has had many people walking through its doors since it came on the market earlier this year. Some time between 8pm on Friday and 9.30am Saturday, someone forced open the rear door using a screwdriver.
They then went to the pantry and tried to remove a safe that was bolted in.
A man who lived at the house heard his dogs barking and the noise as the burglar tried to remove the safe, but was unable to make it downstairs because of a bad back.
After unsuccessfully trying to remove the safe, the thieves instead stole a video camera that was also stored in the pantry.
Detective Senior Constable Ray Ross said from now on, people wanting to view the property would have to show photo identification and have their details recorded.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Cranbourne CIU on 5991 0661.
