Remnant vegetation is key

LOCALS wanting to protect and enhance native vegetation on their property can apply for grants.
The City of Casey launched the incentive scheme following recommendations made in the Biodiversity Enhancement Strategy as well as the recently developed Draft Revegetation Strategy that focus on preserving native remnant vegetation in the municipality.
Engineering and environmental services manager David Richardson said the focus of the scheme was to protect remnant vegetation on private properties.
He said this was the key to long-term biodiversity conservation.
“This has been identified as a high priority for the City of Casey because remnant vegetation supports a range of ecological processes which are otherwise difficult to establish through revegetation and provides existing habitat for wildlife.
“Also, the time and costs involved in protecting remnant vegetation in comparison to re-establishing vegetation is minimal,” Mr Richardson said.
There are four funding options available.
