Lock up when getting fuel: police

POLICE are urging people to lock their cars at petrol stations after a spate of thefts.
Detective Sergeant Larry Grimshaw from Cranbourne CIU said a number of thefts of and from cars had happened in Cranbourne over the last few weeks after people had left their cars unlocked or left their keys in the ignition at petrol stations.
He said a number of people had returned to their car after paying for petrol to find items missing or their cars stolen.
Last Wednesday, 19 September a man returned to his car at the BP service station on High Street, Cranbourne, at 5.30pm and found his wallet missing.
He had left the wallet on the front seat while he paid for the petrol.
“We really want this as a crime prevention message,” Det Sgt Grimshaw said. “Make sure you lock your cars when paying for petrol.”
Police are investigating the latest incident and reviewing video surveillance.
Det Sgt Grimshaw said two cars had been stolen from petrol stations in the last couple of months after the keys were left in the ignition.
He said the biggest issue was leaving valuables in cars, with a high number of incidents of property stolen at petrol stations.
