ALL new subdivisions built in Casey in future will require kerb-side numbering.
The decision by Casey Council came amidst concerns about emergency services not being able to find certain addresses.
Deputy mayor Kevin Bradford the City of Berwick terminated a program installing reflective numbering at all new properties in the 1990s.
“If that scheme had continued we would not be in the situation we are in now,” he said.
“You only have to talk to the four emergency services, including the SES, about rushing to get to a house when it’s a matter of minutes or seconds between life and death.”
A report by council officers argued that kerb-side street numbering was not essential, but councillors voted against the recommendation, deciding to make numbering a requirement for permit applications for all new subdivisions.
Officers highlighted painted numbers as preferable to mounted numbering devices. Cr Bradford said the council should look into reflective paints for the numbers. Council officers will now prepare a report for a council meeting in February on a standard form of numbering which would be cost effective and available to all applicants.
