Enough talk, councillors decide

By Sarah Schwager
CASEY Council has closed debate on the issue of renaming streets with the same name.
Furious debate has sparked over the issue in the past few years, with some residents wanting a name change and others opposing a renaming.
Streets under discussion include Conway Street and Conway Court, Frances Crescent and Frances Court, and Christine Street and Christine Place, all in Cranbourne or Cranbourne North.
Councillor Steve Beardon, who lives on Conway Street, has brought the issue to council many times.
At the last council meeting, councillor Janet Halsall accused Cr Beardon of making more of the issue than was necessary.
“The information in this report suggests that individual residents do not wish for changes,” Cr Halsall said.
“As far as I have heard, the only resident who wants a change is Cr Beardon.”
But Cr Beardon rejected the claim, saying that the renaming of the streets was an issue well before he was elected into council.
“I have and need to stay neutral,” he said.
Council accepted a recommendation that no further action be taken in relation to the renaming of the streets and that affected residents be advised accordingly.
Cr Halsall asked that Cr Beardon accept the decision and that the matter not be brought back before council.
“This seems to have been an awful lot of distress for no changes,” she said.
