CASEY Council has donated a new access dinghy to the Lysterfield Sailing Club to help with its popular Sailability program.
The program offers social sailing to school-aged children and adults of all abilities.
It came about as part of Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Access for All Abilities program to allow people with a disability to participate in sailing.
“This unique and valuable program benefits participants and volunteers. For participants, the sailing carries the rewards of freedom, joy and satisfaction while being amongst the elements,” mayor Colin Butler said.
“For the volunteer there is reward in meeting the challenge of supporting and encouraging participants.”
The new access dinghy will add to the existing three dinghies and overcome demand for the Sailability program.
The dinghy includes simple controls that coordinate the rudder and sail which makes it easy to steer.
About 30 people participate in the program every Wednesday and alternate Sundays.
Lysterfield Sailing Club is looking for more volunteers. Call Faith Tyler on 9705 9111.
To participate in the Sailability program contact Julianne Ward or Julie Walton on 5941 1535.
The program will not operate over the winter period.
