Amanda’s still all at sea

By Glen Atwell
TOORADIN’S Amanda Appleton is still getting used to standing on solid ground.
The naval seaman has just returned home from a memorable ocean cruise, she was aboard the HMAS Adelaide’s final overseas voyage before the esteemed frigate was decommissioned from the Navy on the weekend.
Ms Appleton, who attended Kooweerup Secondary College and joined the Navy in 2004 after finishing year 11, said she was looking forward to standing still after spending so many rocky months on the sea.
“I’ve spent so much time travelling, I am looking forward to a shore posting which will balance it out,” she said.
The HMAS Adelaide is one of the Navy’s most decorated frigates, it was commissioned in 1980 and completed several tours of duty in the Persian Gulf.
Amanda specialised as an administrator and sailed through her training, gaining her Certificate II in Business Management with months to spare.
But life in the Navy has turned out to be more than just work, according to Amanda, who has already extensively travelled around South-East Asia.
“Like anything the Navy has its highs and lows, but usually there are more highs,” she said.
“I love it because it’s very social. I have met some of the best mates of my life from being in the Navy. I also love the challenge and variety. I have travelled and seen a lot and the pay is pretty good, too.”
“But I’m glad to be home at the moment,” Amanda said.
