Taste treats for school tots

TOORADIN kids took their tastebuds to new heights last week with a healthy alternative.
As part of Fruit and Vegie Week, last Thursday Tooradin Primary School students sampled fruit and vegetables that they had never tried before.
These included pears, apples, bananas, grapes, mushrooms, capsicum, bean shoots and more.
Market fresh provided the fruit and vegies, which were sponsored by local farmers.
Students were also shown a video showing how fruit and vegies came from the farmer to the supermarket and then to customers.
They were told about the benefits of eating a diet of fresh fruit and vegies.
The day, organised by prep and grade one teacher Emma Malinowski, provided the students with some interesting facts, including that the banana plant was a herb and that legumes included bean shoots, mung beans and alfalfa.
Ms Malinowski said it was a great opportunity for the students to experiment with some new foods and everyone took home some yummy recipes.
