Scorpions make a move

THE search is on for local football talent, with the new Casey Scorpions officially settling in the City of Casey.
The VFL team, formerly known as Springvale Scorpions, moved into its new temporary headquarters at the Cranbourne Indoor Leisure Complex on BerwickCranbourne Road last week.
General manager Brian Woodman said it was important to establish the club in Casey as early as possible to allow it to become involved in the local community before the start of the 2006 football season.
He said the team would move into its new administration facilities at the Casey Fields main pavilion by the end of March next year.
“We thought it was important to get settled into the area and let the community know who we are and what we’re doing over the next six months.
“We will be starting our preseason training at the new ground at Casey Fields from mid November and it is important for us to be in the area to do that,” he said.
Mr Woodman said the new facilities at Casey Fields would be tailored to the future development of the club, aiming to provide a pathway for young local players to play at the highest level.
“From this office we can talk to people about becoming involved in our football club and launch the new branding of Casey Scorpions,” he said.
The News was given a sneak preview of the progress of development of Casey Fields during an exclusive tour with Casey CEO Mike Tyler, manager of building services Ron Walker and project engineer Chris Beardshaw on Monday.
Mr Walker said the main oval, two smaller ovals and three netball courts would be ready for action at the start of the 2006 football/netball season, while cricket would begin on two new pitches by October 2006.
He said construction of the stateoftheart facilities at Casey Fields had run “perfectly to plan”, and that the VFL pavilion would be ready for the first game of the season in April.
“We are ecstatic about the progress so far. There have been no hold ups,” Mr Walker said.
“The weather conditions put pressure on the construction of the VFL pavilion in the last month but council staff should be proud of their work.
“They have certainly done a lot in a short time.
“We believe Casey Fields will provide a fantastic venue for sporting development in Casey.”
Locals can catch their first glimpse of development at Casey Fields at an open day on Saturday, 29 October from 11am to 3pm.
Entry to the facility is by free shuttle bus only, departing from the Casey Indoor Leisure Complex.
