A THREE-WEEK police operation targeting Cranbourne drivers has ended with a relatively low amount of traffic offences detected.
Operation Spare was introduced in the Cranbourne area to target all traffic offences and reflect the police’s new zero tolerance stance.
The aim of the operation was to combat the high number of fatalities on Cranbourne roads this year.
Detective Sergeant Larry Grimshaw, of Cranbourne CIU, said although the operation had finished, it could be run again in the future.
“It produced good results and was a positive move in our efforts to make the roads safer for the community,” he said.
Of the 700 breath tests and vehicle checks carried out, four drink-driving offences were detected, nine unlicensed drivers, 19 unregistered vehicles, 61 exceeding the speed limit, 41 unroadworthy vehicles and five charged and taken to court. Det Sgt Grimshaw said he hoped local drivers felt the effects of the traffic blitz and increased police presence on the streets.
“Now that the operation has finished we will see if it has educated people, otherwise we will have to do it again,” he said.
