Due for a change of luck

JAYNE Davies’ dreams of winning a second Inter Dominion title and adding a Victoria Derby trophy to her already bursting cabinet were shot to pieces by a run of hard luck at Moonee Valley on Saturday night.
Ms Davies was chasing her second Inter Dominion title, after star pacer Golden Reign won the event in 1995, but Penny Vejay could not get into the race after drawing a luckless barrier nine.
In the Victoria Derby, Crusaders Castle looked certain to salute for favourite punters and provide Ms Davies with an important win, but after driver Chris Alford had trailed the leader perfectly for most of the race, the plan went awry.
“I honestly thought we had the Derby in the bag, Chris had driven Crusaders Castle perfectly, we had a perfect sit behind the leader and the pace was on,” Ms Davies said.
“Then all of a sudden the leader went from bolting to nothing and put the cue in the rack. It dropped back right on to Chris and by the time we got going again, the swoopers had come past.”
“It was a tough night, but we’ve refocused and moved on.”
Next on the agenda for Ms Davies is the Tricodes Day, an event which she thoroughly enjoys and supports every year.
“I’ll definitely have runners in, I’ve got some pacers coming back from injuries and spells, so there could be a few surprises to look out for,” she said.
