Crews ferried to island blaze

IT was a restless weekend for rescue crews at Warneet Yacht Club after French Island caught fire after a lightning strike on Friday.
Rescue boat captain Matthew Renshaw reported the fire just before 5pm on Friday when he saw what looked like an explosion from the water.
Police and the CFA attended with water bombers to try to quash the fire.
Mr Renshaw said he and other rescue workers were on standby all night and the next day, taking CFA firefighters over to the island and back by boat.
It took firefighters a couple of days to contain the blaze, which sent a pall of smoke over the Mornington Peninsula.
The fire burnt an area of 36 hectares in the northwest section of French Island.
There were no reports of damage caused by the fire.
