Concern over wirebarricades

By Rebecca Fraser
A CASEY road safety group has expressed concerns about wire barricades along Thompsons Road in Cranbourne.
It has also called for more information to be presented on the new road safety measure.
Elizabeth Tully, secretary of Casey Roads and Infrastructure Group (CRAIG) said the group would now write to Transport Minister Peter Batchelor, VIC Roads and Casey Council to seek more information about the barricades.
“We met last week and discussed the safety along roads where there are wire barricades and decided that we needed more information on them,” she said.
“Through these letters we are asking for as much information as possible about the barriers.
“We are also going to research and search on the internet ourselves and see where these barricades have been used overseas.
“We want to know what will happen if people run into them.”
Mrs Tully said fellow CRAIG member Ray Males had expressed concern at the meeting that the barricades had reduced the size of emergency stopping lanes.
“His concern was that there was no where to pull over if cars or trucks broke down where there are barriers,” she said.
Mayfield Ward councillor Kevin Bradford also attended the CRAIG meeting last week and said he also had some concerns about the wire barricades.
“My main concerns are, number one, that I agree there is some concern about what happens if people veer off and run into the barriers, particularly with motorcyclists,” Cr Bradford said.
“My other big concern is: Where can vehicles, travelling in both directions pull over if they break down, as there is no emergency stopping area?
“This may impede vehicles behind them and they may have to drive around and possibly face on coming traffic.”
