Chamber cheers footy focus

THECranbourne Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the move to secure an AFL match for the City of Casey.
Last week the News reported that the City of Casey had secured a NAB pre-season Cup match in round two next year at the multimillion-dollar Casey Fields sports complex in Cranbourne East.
Chamber president Derek West said the match would be great for Casey locals.
“Normally people have to travel into the MCG or Telstra Dome to watch a match,” Mr West said.
“If they have one in Casey it will be right in their back yard.”
He said whether the match brought people to Cranbourne, thereby boosting business, or not, it would give locals reason to want to continue living and working in the area.
“People will be commuting to Cranbourne to go to the footy instead of into the city.
“That’s got to have a ring to it,” he said.
Mr West said if the match did attract a large volume of traffic, he hoped the Casey Complex could handle it.
“Of course if Cranbourne had a bypass it would be a whole different story,” he said.
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford said the AFL was yet to determine which teams would take to the field in Cranbourne, but it would most likely be two Melbourne-based clubs.
