Boy rescued from creek mud

By Sarah Schwager
A 10-YEAR-OLD caused a stir in Cannons Creek on Sunday when he became stuck in mud in the creek.
The town hopped to action as emergency services were called at about 4pm to rescue the boy after he broke his leg trying to get out of the wetlands behind Hardy Avenue.
The fire brigade, police, ambulance and police helicopter worked to remove the boy from the mud, eventually winching him to safety.
Detective Sergeant Larry Grimshaw at Cranbourne CIU said quick thinking by rescue workers made sure the boy did not sink any further in the mud before he could be lifted out by helicopter.
He was then airlifted to Frankston Hospital.
Cannons Creek Neighbourhood Watch coordinator Bill D’Oliveira said the event certainly caused a bit of excitement at the coastal town.
He rushed down to the scene after hearing one firetruck after another roar past his house.
“It just goes to show that the emergency enterprises are on the ball,” Mr D’Oliveira said.
“From a neighbourhood watch point of view it was very, very good news.
“And the young lad that ran home to tell his parents did a very good job instantly realising that his friend was in trouble and getting help.”
Mr D’Oliveira said while the area was not a dangerous playing area by any means, it was very muddy and tidal.
He warned locals to be safe and be aware of the tides and watch where they were walking.
