A MOTORCYCLIST was killed in Devon Meadows on Sunday morning on his way to the MotoGP in Phillip Island.
The Caulfield man, 53, lost control of his motorbike at a roundabout at the intersection of South Gippsland Highway and Baxter-Tooradin Road at about 7.15am.
The man died after he collided with a road sign at the roundabout.
Police said it appeared the man had not seen the roundabout.
The roads leading to Phillip Island had been heavy with fog all morning, with a number of minor collisions reported on the highway and other roads leading to the event.
The state road toll rose considerably at the weekend after another five people died in road collisions.
Assistant Commissioner for Traffic Noel Ashby said the latest fatalities were disappointing and had increased the road toll figures for the year considerably in just a few hours.
“A few weeks ago we were looking at the road toll figures and hoping that if we had a good September and October we would finish the year well down from last year’s numbers. However in just over a week we have had 15 fatalities,” he said.
He said the motorcyclist fatality highlighted the need for drivers and motorcyclists to drive to the conditions.
At the same time last year, the road toll stood at 243. This year’s road toll is 220.
