Strong winds, heat

STRONG winds and scorching temperatures re-ignited a grass fire in Cannons Creek last week.
It is believed embers still hot in the ground from a burn-off the week before flared the blaze, which began about 9.45am on Friday.
It took CFA crews from Pearcedale, Devon Meadows, Tooradin and Warneet almost two hours to completely control the area on Baxter-Tooradin Road.
The fire prompted a warning from Devon Meadows CFA’s Captain Tony Allen for property owners to properly extinguish and monitor burn-offs.
“The heat is often kept in the ground for a while after a burn-off and it only takes a hot day and a bit of wind to reignite embers,” he said.
“Make sure you keep checking the area for the next one to two weeks after burning and do not throw fresh material on the ground.
“Also, you cannot conduct burn-offs without a permit when fire restrictions are in force.”
