Radio star shines over the internet

By Alison Noonan
COMMUNITY radio station 3SER has gone global.
For the first time in its 20year history the Cranbourne based station is online, broadcasting live around the world via the internet.
Station manager and president David Lentin said the website had received hits from Germany, America, England, India, New Zealand and the Cook Islands since airing online three weeks ago.
“It is a great thrill as a community station to be broadcasting to people around the world.
“I thought this was something we should do as a community service.
“It’s something I can’t believe has happened it’s amazing,” he said.
Mr Lentin said the 24hour availability of the station’s programs meant that people overseas could listen to night recordings during the day.
“A lot of our recordings are played overnight but this will suit listeners in different time zones.
“We have 16 ethnic programs here and going on line has been a big advantage to them as they can now communicate to their loved ones.
“We can now also broadcast our sports program all over Australia,” he said.
Jazz presenter Tommy Carter said his program was now the only jazz station broadcast on the internet. “Now we can go to places that we couldn’t before.
“For example our signal doesn’t go to Leongatha but since we went online they have been able to listen to us on the internet,” he said. The station can be found at www.3ser.org.au.
