Local crashes lift holiday toll to16

VICTORIA’S annual Christmas and New Year road toll period finished on Sunday with 16 fatalities recorded.
The deaths were a result of 13 crashes, including ones in Cannons Creek, Drouin, Nar Nar Goon and Upper Beaconsfield.
Assistant Commissioner (Traffic) Noel Ashby said the New Year period was typically tragic for many families and friends.
“At this time of year people are often stressed, under pressure to drive long distances, fatigued, and some are under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” Mr Ashby said.
“The chance of having a collision under these conditions is increased dramatically and that’s a risk not only to yourself and your passengers but to everyone else on the road.
“Despite the conclusion of this operation, police will continue to be out on the roads urging drivers to behave responsibly every time they’re behind the wheel.”
Last year’s Christmas holiday road toll was 13. The highest recorded was 21 in 1996-97 and 12 in 2000-01.
