Homestead is an open house again

HISTORIC building The Homestead was reopened as the Hillcrest Community House at Hillcrest Christian College last Friday.
The heritage listed building has been out of action for a year after it was moved to the site as the school raised funds to plaster, repaint and carpet the property.
It was officially opened by Casey councillors Mick Morland and Brian Hetherton on Friday who cut the ribbon and revealed a plaque.
Hillcrest Christian College marketing and promotions coordinator Stuart Alsop said the building would now be used as a community house, college chaplain, after school care program, uniforms and books storage, parents’ prayer group and general use.
Mr Alsop said the opening was a combined celebration among teachers, parents, students and community representatives.
He said there was also a display of artwork by students.
“The year 10 photography students took close-up photos of the building which they then produced using different filters.
“The junior students came down one day and drew charcoal sketches of The Homestead,” he said.
The year seven students also put on a re-enactment play of the history of The Homestead.
“Unfortunately, the rain came down about half way through so most people couldn’t hear the end because they were running for cover,” Mr Alsop.
People were also given tours of the rooms, with displays in each room.
