Five hurt in two-car smash

– Sarah Schwager
THREE people had to be taken to hospital by air ambulance after a major collision in Cranbourne on Tuesday night.
Sergeant Pat McGavigan from Casey TMU said a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan driven by a 23-year-old Narre Warren North man with a 30-year-old Dandenong woman passenger was travelling along Camms Road when it was in a collision with a 1988 red Honda sedan.
An 18-year-old Cranbourne North woman who was driving the other car and her two passengers, an 18-year-old Cranbourne man and 16-year-old Cranbourne boy, were all seriously injured.
The woman was airlifted to The Alfred hospital and the two passengers were airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital after they had to be extracted from the car by the CFA.
Sgt McGavigan said the Honda was coming out of Sharpe Street when the crash happened.
He said a nearby railway crossing may have contributed to the collision and was currently being investigated.
“We ask all people to take care in and around railway crossings, especially after the tragedy last week (in Kerang),” Sgt McGavigan said.
The collision happened at 7.15pm and traffic was diverted for a number of hours before the scene could be cleared.
The two people in the Lancer were also taken to hospital by ambulance.
Any witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Senior Constable Edwards at Casey TMU on 9705 3174 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
