Council hunts for cash to finish Casey Fields

CASEY councillor Colin Butler has called for the urgent completion of facilities at Casey Fields before the start of the 2006 sporting season.
The Balla Balla Ward councillor told last week’s council meeting that various projects were at a standstill because of a lack of funds.
Cr Butler said floodlights needed to be installed on oval three, ovals two and three were still without a scoreboard/timekeeper box, three netball courts did not have shelters/scorers boxes and a roller shed was needed near the premier cricket precinct.
“There is not enough money left in council’s budget to complete these particular items,” he said.
“They can’t be covered from excess funds because all contracts came in right on budget.
“But we have sporting clubs needing to train on these facilities.”
Cr Butler said VFL club Casey Scorpions trained on ovals two and three and Devon Meadows Football Club and Cranbourne Cricket Club would also be tenants in the coming season.
He said the Cranbourne Netball Club would also be needing the courts from April.
“I hope these facilities will be up and running for the start of the football/netball season.
“I hope council can find a way of funding these important projects,” he said.
Cr Butler requested a report come back to the next council meeting with costings for the various projects and a possible funding source.
The calls come as the council celebrates the official opening of Casey Fields tomorrow (Friday, 17 February).
Residents are invited to catch the first glimpse of the multi-million dollar sporting facility at a free community barbecue from 5.30pm.
There will also be live music, a public art unveiling and entertainment for the kids.
The Casey Fields opening will be held at the Casey Fields Village Green, Berwick-Cranbourne Road , Cranbourne East.
