Search for significant trees

CASEY residents are asked to nominate significant trees within the community for a study highlighting the importance of trees in the area.
Mayor Colin Butler said the study would recognise the importance of trees in people’s lives and landscapes.
“Significant trees could be those dedicated to an important event or important people, like an Avenue of Honour to remember soldiers killed at war or early pioneers. But they could also be large and mature trees that will take decades to replace, a stand of trees indigenous to the area, trees of environmental and scientific value, providing an important habitat for birds and animals, or even an iconic tree in your neighbourhood,” he said.
The Significant Tree Study was initiated by Casey’s Conservation Advisory Committee, of which the mayor is a representative.
Cr Butler, who himself has a farm of trees, said that as a community member he would be completing a few nomination forms himself.
“(The study) will make Casey a more environmentally conscious place, give life to our streets, and help to recognise the importance of trees to the landscape and how aesthetically pleasing trees are to the eye.”
Nomination forms are available from council’s website at www.casey.vic.gov.au/treestudy or by calling 9705 5200. Nominations are due by Wednesday, 28 February.
