Plaque commemorates lifetime of service

CITY of Casey Council paid tribute to the life of community volunteer, Walter Leslie Kelly, by unveiling a memorial plaque in his honour at the old Shire Offices in Cranbourne last Sunday.
Casey mayor Janet Halsall said she was pleased to honour Mr Kelly’s memory with a plaque commemorating his lifetime of service to the City of Casey.
Mr Kelly moved to Cranbourne in the 1950s with his wife Kathleen. He joined the local fire brigade in 1957, later becoming a life member and going on to receive the Queen’s Medal for exemplary fire service.
For more than 30 years, he donated his time to the Society of St Vincent de Paul as well as volunteering as co-ordinator and collector for many Red Cross fundraising appeals.
Mr Kelly served the Cranbourne community as a Justice of the Peace and received the Shire of Cranbourne Citizen of the Year Award in 1981, and the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1985.
Cr Halsall said his willingness to be involved made a real difference to the community.
“He protected people, helped people through difficult times and helped to strengthen his community and make it a better place to live.”
