Lions call out for members

By Sarah Schwager
THE Lions Club of Cranbourne is appealing for new members to help the club keep providing services to those in need.
Club president Michael Shepherdson said the club wanted to keep putting back into the community, especially to help out Cranbourne’s disadvantaged residents.
About 10 years ago, the Lions Club had 40 members, now it has just 13.
“With so few members it can be difficult to operate to our full potential,” Mr Shepherdson said.
The club is conducting a membership information evening next Monday, 8 May.
The night will include guest speakers and a free barbecue.
“We are looking for people who are interested in helping their community,” Mr Shepherdson said.
“Tradespeople are especially welcome but anyone can help out whether it’s running a barbecue or organising an event.”
The Lions Club supports Cranbourne’s youth with scholarships, organises the Christmas concert for senior citizens, assists local not-for-profit groups, is involved with Ronald McDonald House, participates with Operation Driver Reviver and aids disadvantaged members of the community with things like handyman work and medical equipment.
The club used to run a Sunday market but could not keep it going.
The Lions Club is open to all men and women over the age of 18.
The information evening starts at 7pm at the Cranbourne Senior Citizens Centre on the corner of Codrington Street and South Gippsland Highway.
