Footy day fever

FOOTY fever struck a Narre Warren school last week when it staged its very own
All year, eight mixed teams of grade five and six students at Hallam Valley Primary School have competed in the school’s own football league.
On Wednesday, 13 September the top two teams played off in the Hallam Valley Football League (HVFL) Grand Final.
The Coleman Red Belly Black Snakes, named after Essendon legend John Coleman, scored a win over the Farmer Kookaburras, named after Geelong great Graeme ‘Polly’ Farmer.
The final score was 23 to 12.
Grade five and six teacher Chris Pentland said the Community Footy Day had been a huge success.
Throughout the day students from grade preps to four took part in footy clinics run by the ‘HVFL’ stars.
There was also a football parade where students dressed up in their favourite HVFL and AFL colours, as well as a handball competition and a football lunch.
In the afternoon parents and friends were invited to take to the field for a kick to kick session and Mr Pentland said some 400 footballs had been in use at the one time.
Students also learnt how to perfect their speckies, goal kicking and handballing skills and also watched a football video.
Former Hawthorn champion Peter Knights was also on hand to sign autographs and talk to the young football fans.
“It was a big success and we will definitely be doing it next year,” Mr Pentland said.
