Station steams ahead

THE Lynbrook Railway Station will be built at Aylmer Road after the State Government confirmed the new site.
The City of Casey welcomed advice from the Minister for Transport, Peter Batchelor.
The news has cleared up uncertainty over the past two years after some State Government planners sought to relocate the proposed station about one kilometre closer to Cranbourne.
Council fought the move strongly, supported Lyndhurst MP Tim Holding.
City of Casey mayor Kevin Bradford said the confirmation of the site was an important decision for the residents of Lynbrook.
“The entire Lynbrook community has developed around the expectation that the Lynbrook Railway Station would be located at Aylmer Road. Even the recently opened underpass was designed to match entry arrangements for the new station,” Cr Bradford said.
“Any attempt from state planners to move the proposed station away from Aylmer Road is nonsensical and shows a real lack of understanding of the development issues in this growth area.”
The news also means that the State Government can more readily plan for the construction of the station.
Mr Batchelor said he had asked the Department of Infrastructure to commence investigations into the preferred design for the station and its likely cost.
He also said the State Government would consider the funding requirements of a new station in its future budget deliberations.
“Council looks forward to the State Government’s forthcoming livability statement with an expectation that it will give high priority to public transport issues in Melbourne’s growth areas,” Cr Bradford said.
