Room of island culture

By Alison Noonan
PACIFIC Island culture was celebrated with the opening of the ‘Polyhood’ room at Cranbourne Secondary College last week.
Members of the school’s Pacific Island Club unveiled the space during an enlightening evening of cultural dancing, food, singing and activities on Tuesday.
The club was established to improve the image of Pacific Islander students within the school and develop a better understanding of their culture and values.
Cranbourne Anglicare worker Debbie Nobbs said the group had received rave reviews since its formation earlier in the year and was delighted at the interest shown by the school community. “The thing that excites me the most is the level of interest and involvement by everyone who finds out what the Island Representative Council students and their families are trying to achieve,” she said.
“The group has received a request from a local primary school and community house to come and present their ideas and provide education to others about Pacific Island cultures.”
Year 10 student Angelina said becoming a member of the group had instilled her with confidence and taught her many things.
“It’s also building and shaping me for my goals in the future,” she said.
Ms Nobbs said the Polyhood room was decorated with information and cultural items donated by family and friends.
She said the opening of the room was a special occasion for all group members who had worked hard throughout the year.
