Free plant, compliments of council

THE City of Casey is holding a free plant giveaway to celebrate Arbor Week.
All Casey residents can collect a free plant at Westfield Fountain Gate and Centro Cranbourne Shopping Centres from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 May.
Now in its sixth year, the plant giveaway is part of the community-based Growing a Green Web program, which aims to revegetate open space through volunteer involvement.
Casey mayor Colin Butler said each year about 20,000 plants were planted on public land through the program with the help of schools, friends’ groups, committees of management, service clubs and correctional services.
“Casey’s annual Arbor Week plant giveaway gives residents and business owners the opportunity to plant and nurture native vegetation on their properties, and help ensure the future of Casey’s natural environment,” Cr Butler said.
Plants to be given away will include a mixture of trees, shrubs and groundcovers suitable to the local area, including a blend of hardy Australian natives and local indigenous plants.
Cr Butler said it was best to plant the new plants before the colder weather set in.
Two plants per household with proof of residence will be available and distribution will be made on a first come, first served basis.
Visit Westfield Fountain Gate level two outside Priceline and Centro Cranbourne Shopping Centre near the food court from 9.30am to 5pm on Wednesday 23 to Friday, 25 May and 9.30am to noon on Saturday, 26 May.
