Students become politically aware

STUDENTS at Courtenay Gardens Primary School entered a world of politics last Thursday.
The State Government sent out representatives from Parliament House to the Cranbourne school to talk to the Grade 5 and 6 kids about how the system of government worked.
Grade six teacher Don Lang said the children learnt about how the government operates, about the House of Representatives, the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, and watched a DVD on how elections are run and how the voting system works.
“In term four they will be learning about the bicameral system of government and all associated things with that,” he said. “So this was really a precursor to that.”
The kids were also given the chance to hold the ceremonial mace, and they were told about different electorates and how they operated to represent the people.
“They all thought it was terrific,” Mr Lang said. “They learnt quite a bit.
“I don’t know how many aspiring politicians we have among them but they all love to talk.”
