New home needed for university

By Alison Noonan
MEMBERS of the Cranbourne U3A are desperate to find a new home.
Currently forced to divide time between the Cranbourne Community House, the Uniting Church hall, the Cranbourne Indoor Swimming Pool and even tutors’ homes, President Bev Wood said the recently formed club was in urgent need of a permanent meeting place.
Mrs Wood said she hoped the club, which has 67 members, could establish an office that would be open all day, five days a week, rather than the current practice of meeting once a month.
“We really need to be open between 10am and 3pm every day in one specific place,” she said.
“At the moment our craft group is meeting at the community house but that is too small and not appropriate for large groups, while it is costing us money to hire the hall for our popular Tai Chi classes.
“We also want to set up a library because we already have a lot of books and 15 computers donated to us just sitting idle,” she said.
Mrs Wood said the club had grown so quickly since it was established in August that it had taken the committee by surprise.
However, she said she was confident of finding a new place to call home by the start of next year.
“At the moment we are flying by the seat of our pants but we’ll get there,” she said.
“We just have to be patient and keep our fingers crossed.
“We have had lovely comments from members who are happy to have the companionship so we just need to give them the full resources they signed on for,” she said.
Mayfield Ward councillor Kevin Bradford has asked council officers to investigate locations for a new home.
