Huon Park hoons to get the hump

By Alison Noonan
CASEY Councillor Steve Beardon has allocated $20,000 for the urgent installation of speed humps on one of Cranbourne North’s most troubled roads.
Bus cushions are set to be laid on Huon Park Drive following the allocation of minor capital works funds to councillors at last week’s council meeting.
Each of the 11 councillors was given $20,000 to spend on projects throughout their ward, including donations to non-profit community organisations.
Cr Beardon said he chose to allocate all his funds to road safety improvements on the Cranbourne North street, which for years has been terrorised by hoon drivers.
“Hoons on the road is the biggest issue facing me as a councillor,” he said.
“This issue affects every single resident in the street and adjoining collector roads.
“I want to clean up the whole area and if I can save just one life or help one resident sleep at night I will be a very happy councillor.”
Cr Beardon said the rubber bus pads cost half the price of regular humps and were equally effective in deterring speeding drivers.
“I can only get three of the bus cushions for $20,000 but they are cheaper than regular speed humps.
“Drivers will be forced to slow down or risk damaging their cars if they go over them at high speed.
“They are working well in Doveton so the next step now is to consult with residents on where to locate them.”
Cr Beardon said he hoped the bus cushions would be installed within the next few months.
“We just have to get the okay from the bus companies that use this route and work with residents on where to position them.
“Then it’s a goer,” he said.
