LOCAL youth from the Somali community joined Casey’s Youth Ambassadors in an excursion to Sovereign Hill in an effort to help them connect with other young Casey residents.
More than 20 young Somali people, mainly young women, joined seven Casey Youth Ambassadors for the trip.
City of Casey youth and family services manager Lee McIntosh said with Casey’s increasingly diverse population, the council was trying to provide culturally sensitive programs and services to meet the needs of the community.
“Young people comprise a large component of our population and play an important role in ensuring newly arrived families feel a sense of connectedness to the community.
“This trip was a sensational success and provided a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain greater awareness of other cultures, plus build a sense of community and belonging.”
Casey Youth Ambassadors is for young people aged 15 to 25.
They meet on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 6.30pm at Wilson Botanic Park, Princes Highway, Berwick.
