Race day unites for family fun

THE annual Trade Union Family Raceday was held at Cranbourne on Sunday with a crowd of 4000 attending and creating a happy, family atmosphere.
Early drizzle and overcast conditions reduced the crowd number on previous years but those who made the journey to the ninth union sponsored race meeting were treated to a good afternoon’s racing together with a variety of on-course activities and entertainment.
Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge said it had been a great day, with families getting behind the racing club.
“It was a terrific day, especially when you consider that at one stage it was forecast for thunderstorms and wind,” Mr Bainbridge said.
He said while the turnout was down on last year’s event, it was great considering the poor weather.
The day was complemented by events including professional footraces on the track between races, together with live music and free children’s activities.
Some punters were not so happy about the day after being turned away at the gate for bringing alcohol with them.
Last year, those attending the meeting were allowed to bring their own drinks but now this has been banned across all racing clubs.
Mr Bainbridge said he had not received any official complaints but he knew that people were turned away at the front gate.
“But there were no upset, irate people,” he said. “I think people realise that in this day and age that is where things are at.
“We will continue to enforce it at every race meet as well as ensure we have enough cold supply and staff to serve it.
“They can still take it back to the lawn and hopefully maintain an overall ambience of a family atmosphere.”
The meeting was well supported by local and metropolitan trainers with Cranbourne-trained horses winning four of the nine races.
Minister for Racing John Pandazopoulos attended the meeting together with Cranbourne MP Jude Perera.
Mr Bainbridge said he was looking forward to the next major family focused race meeting, Family Day Out on 29 December.
This year kids can enter for free and will also be treated to a special Wiggles Characters Stage Show, featuring Dorothy the Dinosaur and Captain Feathersword.
