Safety fears close loos

VANDALS have forced the closure of toilets at Cranbourne’s Life Be In It centre.
Casey councillor Colin Butler said sporting players were frustrated at having to trek to the front of the complex after the main amenities were shut to the public due to repeated vandalism attacks.
Cr Butler said more than 450 people had signed a petition calling for the toilets to be reopened amid safety concerns that young kids had to walk alone through the centre at night.
“There are many kids playing sport at the complex and they need supervising when walking up the other end at night,” he said.
“But often there aren’t enough parents available to watch the games and chaperone the kids as well.”
Cr Butler said centre manager Recro Sport had agreed to open the main toilets for a couple of hours on a Wednesday night to accommodate frustrated netball players.
However, other teams now wanted the same treatment, he said.
“We want the toilets open every night when the other sports, such as basketball, are competing,” Cr Butler said.
“Council needs to help with the upgrade of the toilets and install surveillance cameras to deter kids from vandalising.
“Windows through the hallway would also make it obvious that kids were mucking around and prevent it from happening.”
At a recent council meeting, Cr Butler requested officers investigate the situation.
