DEVON Meadows Football Club members got the shock of their lives when they were sent a gas bill for $999,972.65.
Club president Michael Brick said after receiving the bill, the club had rung Elgas to let them know they would have to pay in instalments.
“We were thinking $1 a week,” Mr Brick said.
“It was just a mistake, but we had a bit of a laugh about it. It was quite funny. We handed it around to a few people.”
GST on the bill was $90,906.60.
But Mr Brick said the 874,102 litres of gas they were said to have used had not been used up at a massive barbecue at Glover Reserve or to keep the players’ toes warm in winter.
“If the bill had stood, the players would be getting paid with gas,” he said, laughing.
Mr Brick said thankfully the bill had been reversed and the club could go back to its normal fund-raising activities for equipment and facility upgrades.
