Council targets speeding drivers

CASEY Council is cracking down on speeding drivers on one of Cranbourne’s busiest residential roads.
Camms Road (West) will be included on the Speed Awareness Mobile (SAM) program to reinforce to motorists the speed they are travelling after a traffic survey revealed that 31 per cent of drivers were exceeding the 60km/h speed limit.
Mayfield Ward councillor Kevin Bradford said residents often complained about speeding drivers using the road as a bypass to avoid the traffic lights in High Street.
He said a recent traffic survey revealed that more than 10,000 motorists travelled on Camms Road daily.
“It is a fairly heavily used local road and it needs to be more closely monitored.
“The speed alert machine is a proactive measure of telling motorists to slow down.
“The local police Traffic Management Unit will also be notified of the problem and we will be requesting extra patrols of the area,” he said.
Cr Bradford said that following last week’s council meeting the road would now be referred to the next stage of council’s LTM Prioritisation Strategy.
He said if promoted to stage two on the priority list a roundabout would be installed at the intersection of Roberts Road and Christine Street and kerb outstands placed at several intersections along the street.
“Adding it to the priority list means that if the problem continues or increases it is already in the strategy to do more roadworks to alleviate or solve the problem.
“Council has already spent $100,000 on traffic calming devices along Monahans Road so works on Camms Road will complete the whole section,” he said.
